I’m finding I can’t reply on some lemmy instances threads. I can however post to those same communities. Has any one else had this issue?
I have the issue on lemmy.world and beehaw.org. I can’t reply there (but I can post). However, I can post and reply to lemmy.ml
I believe this is “intended behavior”, though more warning messages really need to be made.
beehaw.org has defederated from lemmy.world. That means that you cannot post to any community on beehaw.org (at least, not until they refederate).
I think the developers need to have servers detect the one-way federation situation (ie: lemmy.world still wants to federate with Beehaw.org, so lemmy.world is still importing all the posts/comments from Beehaw.org… but Beehaw.org has blocked lemmy.world from their end, so posts/comments will NOT go through). Then, when this situation is detected, tell users “Warning, your posts will not go through because Beehaw.org has defederated from Lemmy.world”.
Yeah that would be better behavior. Or maybe the comments should go through but only on the side that still wants to be federated (considering a copy is made on both instances).
This federated infighting prob hurting new instance growth more than anything. I also don’t like the tendency towards monoliths, which is what made reddit an issue to begin with.
If one instance defederates from another, the other instance retains a copy of what it had already cached, but any interaction on your part won’t update the main/real thread on the home instance.
So if I can see new content, can post content, but can’t comment on content, what does that mean?
I guess I’m trying to figure out if this is a bug, a configuration issue, or a federation issue.
Ideally, my lemmy instance behaves like it should, which under my understanding is that people can check out other lemmies, post/ comment but they look like the coming from wsb, etc…
