Absolutely! Tatiana is an absolute BEAST at both the screams and the cleans! Probably one of if not THE best false fold vocalists in the world! And the rest of the band are pretty damn good too!

Btw, if you’re into reaction videos, this song has some of the best ones for obvious reasons 😁

If you’re looking for a good reacter youtuber (especially if you, like me, prefer vocal coach reactions) this one and the two I’m about to post (Ghost Love Score by Nightwish and Oogie Boogie’s Song by Voiceplay) are 3 of the very best “barometers” possible and also some of my personal favorite songs 😁

Haha went in blind and was… appropriately surprised. Pretty cool.

Only tangentially related but whats a clean? I’m not that familiar with music/singing/etc terminology and clean has been one that I’ve been seeing a lot lately used in the way youve been using it. Is it just clean singing? Like, just staying on key?

TL;DR: Clean is “normal” singing with little to no distortion whether it’s in tune or any good or not

A clean is a term originating from metalcore where “screams”, “growls”, “harsh vocals” or whatever you call them are often mixed with undistorted or lightly distorted “clean” vocals, as is the case with this and many (all?) of Jinjer’s other songs as well.

Technically, distorted vocals aren’t necessarily “off key”, but a more scattered “noisy” (in the sense of static on the soundscape, not loudness. Unamplified distorted vocals don’t actually tend to be very loud at all) kind of sound wave produced in very different but no less technical ways than clean ones.

Take Tatiana’s false fold “growling”, for example. She’s producing them using a completely different set of vocal folds that sit on top of the “true” vocal folds that most people use for talking and singing.

To make it even MORE impressive, all of those distorted vocals are actually in the same very narrow tonal range but sound like discrete notes because Tatiana masterfully manipulates the intonation to make it sound like it’s actually different notes!

Sorry if that got too long and technical! I don’t often get to tell people about all the things I learn from watching vocal coaches react to and explain things 😁

That wasn’t too long or technical at all, it was exactly what I’ve been trying to find out for months now! Thank you. I’m all about crazy vocals and skilled singers. Got any suggestions on where I could learn more on stuff you wrote about or just general technical junk about music/singing? I’ve always been fascinated by it

I’m so happy my little primer was helpful! I have a whole bunch of suggestions but right now I’m actually on my way to bed heh. I’ll get them to you tomorrow though, if you reply to this one so that the notification reminds me to 😁

The Fairy Voice Mother (real name Loli Wren, under which name she has a channel where she’s performed a few excellent covers) is probably my favorite.

She’s an excellent teacher, amazing at singing (including an uncanny ability to imitate the vocals of almost any singer to demonstrate the technique) and her reaction videos are extremely charming and funny. She reacts to a very broad range of music with a special fondness for System of a Down, Dimash,Tool, and her all time favorite singer Jeff Buckley. Her reactions to Pisces by Jinjer (in which she expertly demonstrates and explains false vocal fold singing) and Oogie Boogie’s Song by Voiceplay are the best of any I’ve seen and I’ve seen perhaps dozens of each 😄

Another great one is Jennifer Glatzhofer (but as she points out in her intro, you can call her Jen 😁)

She’s a musical theater performer (who also does a lot of general covers on the same channel and recently released a couple singles with an album imminent) and vocal coach who also reacts to a lot of different kinds of music, with a special fondness for a capella (especially Voiceplay, Home Free, and Pentatonix) and Musical theatre.

Like with Loli, her videos are both informative and very entertaining and funny. When reacting to songs that contain them, she will often try to imitate really deep bass notes and then charmingly laugh at herself for trying to reach notes wat below her range. That being said, she’s actually expanded her range significantly over the course of her channel, being able to go from the low range of tenor notes and even a bit of baritone to her natural range of “whatever the best female roles in musical theater and Disney movies require”, which is already quite broad!

The Charismatic Voice (real name Elizabeth Zharoff) is an opera singer and vocal coach who apart from her vocal expertise has perhaps the most endearingly expressive face and infectious enthusiasm I have ever seen. When she started out, she didn’t know a lot of music except for opera and other classical stuff and radio hits, but over the years she’s developed into a true metal head who was actually on the jury of the Metal Grammies and has developed a beautiful friendship with the phenomenal “screams and growls” virtuoso vocalist ofLorna Shore, Will Ramos.

I have more if you want, but those are the three I watch the most and a great starting point since they not only excel in their vocal expertise but also are just damn entertaining to watch 😁

By all means, feel free to drop as many as you’d like! Though those three seem like more than enough to get me started. I really appreciate it!

As I said, I’m not very familiar with vocal techniques but I feel compelled to point you towards Lingua Ignota. She’s the most metal-not-metal act I’ve ever heard with an incredible voice. I know she was trained in opera when she was young and it definitely shows but she’s one of the most emotive and captivating singers I’ve ever heard. Content warning, her songs are self described “domestic abuse murder ballads” so if that’s too heavy I completely understand lol but I think you’d enjoy her voice at the very least.

On the topic of screams and cleans, I first heard the term in reference to foxtails. They said her transitions into cleans are incredible, so I guess they are? Lol, you might enjoy them. Emo/hardcore, la dispute vibes if you’re familiar with them
