I very much don’t want to have to kill animals for food but meat is such an unreplaceable source of easily digestible nutrients. I’ve been looking at communities like /r/exvegans and /r/stopeatingseedoils and… They’re pretty convincing…

And I’m hungry all the time and my poops are never solid and I get tired sooner than I think I should… But I also never get sick…

I’m tempted to just listen to the drugs on this one, like I didn’t choose to be a carnivorous monkey. Hmmmm. I’ve been craving a steak so badly. Ugh. Urgh.

Something is wrong with your diet. I’ve been vegan for years and have no digestive problems. Only time my poops are like yours are when I am feeling really lazy and eat a pile of oreos instead of a real dinner. Are you just eating straight carbs or something? What is your protein source?

For unexplained fatigue, you should also consider getting a blood test. You may have low iron or B12 levels if you’re not supplementing. If you’re an uninsured American, you can buy this test yourself at LabCorp or Quest. But you might just be eating like shit.

I like tofu and beans and I’m a vegetarian so I’ll even eat eggs and cottage cheese. I supplement B12 and vitamin d already, maybe I have low iron but that wouldn’t cause the digestive issues. I don’t eat seed oils so I’ve been making all my food at home, it’s definitely healthy. I think I just can’t handle the amount of fiber or something.

Maybe I should do some experiments with various probiotics before adding meat again…

Mostly I’m looking at all the highly relatable stories on the exvegans subreddit and I’m concerned I’m letting my body decay underneath me.

Approximately how many grams of protein are you getting a day? Are you eating enough solid food or is everything mush? I cook all my food at home but you can still cook unhealthy food, e.g. I deep fry a lot. I personally couldn’t get enough protein from just tofu. My normal breakfast and lunches both have a serving of seitan, and I eat a block of tofu for most dinners.

Your problems may stem from things you’ve added to your diet rather than things you’ve subtracted. E.g. if you replaced meat with beans but beans are making you shit, the solution is to replace beans but not necessarily to replace beans with meat. If you don’t already have one, get a bidet while you’re trying to get firmer poops. Ultimately, if you’re concerned your body is decaying the way to check is to get tested.

Note that your B12 supplements may not be enough! I’ve been taking 2500mcg once a week and my blood level is still 333pg/ml which is low. I’m going to increase that to 3x a week or so and retest in a few months. Going vegetarian is already more work than blood tests, so I strongly encourage you to get some “objective” idea of what’s going wrong and make other dietary changes 1 at a time if the tests are fine.

And you eat meat right? People here are telling me I need to go to a doctor to figure out why my body can’t tolerate this super new and highly processed diet we’re all supposed to be eating. I never had weird shits when I ate meat.

You haven’t explained, except in the vaguest of terms, what the diet you’re actually eating consists of, what your previous diet consisted of, when you switched, or where you’re getting (or, as I suspect, not getting) important micronutrients, omega fatty acids, etc.

When did you cease non-dxm drug use, and have you considered not taking dxm in extremely large doses?

Bruh, talk to a doctor about your poops, I’m not joking. If anything going vegan should result in great poops. Get your colon figured out.

I never had weird poops when I ate meat… In the past sometimes my ex would order a burger and not finish it and I felt fine eating that meat, which consistently resulted in solid poops the next day. Idk, seems like the problem is my diet not some weird disease. Even if I do have leaky bowel syndrome or whatever, the solution would be meat right?

I mean, the reason I said talk to a doctor is because that kind of colon behavior is beyond my level of knowledge. Someone else suggested you’re not cooking your beans, that could be it.

I honestly don’t care if you’re vegan or not. I’m not. I’m just seeing a person on the internet with nonsensical colon behavior and I want you to have a better understanding of what’s going on. For all I know it could be an indication of something weird going on. Or you just gotta properly cook your beans.

meat is such an unreplaceable source of easily digestible nutrients

Are you being serious right now? This isn’t true, like, at all.

On the off chance this is true and not just an antivegan bait post, I’ll give you two pieces of advice: if you’re hungry all the time, eat more. If your poops aren’t solid, eat more fiber. Beans, tofu, whole grains, they’re all your friends.

Oh, and take B12 if you’re not already. It’s the one nutrient that’s harder to get as a vegan than a carnist, because the animals carnists eat have been supplemented with B12, and some of it is still present in their dead flesh

Well the amount of fiber is the issue. It gives me stomach pain and makes me sleepy and stupid. I’ve been eating a good vegetarian diet with plenty of beans etc but it just doesn’t work for me.

do not robotrip, do not listen to what the robo tells you, do not judge your feeling like shit as caused by anything until you stop robotripping and prove that that isn’t why you feel like shit.

If you make the choice to eat meat, I trust that you have the tools to make that choice soundly, it’s impossible to have zero unhealthy consumption habits and you have to do what you have to do to stay sane under capitalism. Just don’t use fucking Robotussin as your spirit guide on this.

and my poops are never solid

I tried psyllium husk/metamucil recently and I might stick with it. clean pinch every time is that tempting

Also not going to reddit to look at it but the stopeatingseedoils people are, I think, adjacent to some “functional medicine” scam BS that’s taken one of my family members in so idk… Maybe there’s some truth to it but lets just say I’m skeptical.

I will say, and this comes from someone who isn’t even vegan (well, I guess you could argue I’m just a very bad inconsistent vegan, I do try): If you wouldn’t kill the animal and prepare it yourself, but you are willing to just not think about it and let the even-more-horrifying meat industry slaughterhouses and processing plants do it for you with child labor, you’re being a coward and should endeavor to have the courage of your convictions. You may need to adjust what you are eating to get more nutrients, but its definitely untrue that you can’t get them without meat

Don’t torture yourself. If you’re feeling worse and think having meat in your diet will help, then it’s fine. And it’s not all or nothing, you can have meat for just a few meals a week if you want. Or hell if just having a steak every couple months is enough to help, go for it.

If you haven’t been eating other animal products either, those could help too. Eggs are a great protein source and pretty versatile. Cheese (and milk products in general) is just plain delicious. Scrambled eggs with cheese is a very common breakfast for a reason.

Whey, egg, or soy protein powder once a day can help with energy problems.

Psyllium husk supplement pills or metamucil can add fiber to your diet and make poops less frequent.

Hardliners will deny this, but limiting meat to once or twice a week is actually pretty helpful for the environment and for sustainability.

But like, is there nothing better/safer available than cough syrup? Not judging, but is the juice worth the squeeze?

Just saying if you feel like you could use the protein, micro nutrients while still concerned about animal welfare it’s a good compromise to maybe have fettucine vongole a couple times a month. Also maybe lay off the Robotussin, it can have some serious health consequences if you abuse it.

r/stopeatingseedoils is sorta bullshit. wrt r/exvegans, I’ve known some ex-vegans and there are all kinds of reasons somebody goes off a vegan diet, but if somebody goes off the vegan diet and decides to start preaching how veganism is bad for you and nobody should be vegan I’d consider them sus.

I’m not a vegan btw, although I don’t eat a lot of meat. I’d think it’s highly unlikely oil is causing your problem unless you’re like guzzling it down or something. If oil is in fact causing your issues this is something a doctor can help you figure out, it’s not due to the weird pseudoscience that r/stopeatingseedoils ascribes to.

If you’re hungry all the time you’re not eating enough. Track your calories, make sure you’re getting enough calories throughout the day. Many people think they’re eating enough when in fact they’re not - this was the case with me for a while (and still is tbh).

my poops are never solid and I get tired sooner than I think I should

how long has this been going on? Sometimes your body just gets out of whack for whatever reason. Stress consistently fucks up my digestive system, and then when my stress and anxiety begin to recede I tend to get extremely gassy. The human body is imperfect, and we’re not doing it any favors under capitalism. Sometimes your body is just weird. Tiredness and fatigue? Sometimes that just happens. Depression puts me in that state of course. And I can always feel when a storm is coming on because I get a really specific type of deep fatigue that recedes once the storm passes.

But if this has been going on for a while? See a doctor, that’s the best advice. You can start eating meat also which it seems like you want to do, but I don’t think that’s causing any of your issues. Maybe you’re just low in certain nutrients as you hint at? Which you can just take a multivitamin for, which would honestly be a more surefire way to get enough nutrients than eating meat.

Is robotripping even good? r/DXM makes it sound so horrible lol

I thought about trying it but even ingesting it sounds quite unpleasant. First you have to make sure there’s nothing else mixed in, like Tylenol, so it doesn’t kill your liver. Then, having to swallow tons of pills or chug an entire bottle of cough syrup? I think I would probably just vomit.

Are you really really sure the drug isn’t affecting your gut? 👀

Also it’s a super heavy drug and you shouldn’t do it more than twice a year or at all really

Something is causing the shits. If I ever need to shit myself loose and fast, I eat something which will induce it, which for me is tortilla chips or McDonald’s. There’s other foods which give me particular shits: olives make my shit solid, but loose and very slippery, and also makes me shit myself faster. If I’m not hydrated adequately, pooping becomes harder. Oh, and nuts of any kind fasten my poop conversion time a lot. Eating clean makes my poops perfect. Eat something filling like a pizza and then snack on fruits like grapes or raspberries and your poop is perfect. There’s probably more poop wisdom within me, it just doesn’t come to mind. I am always happy to share my shit takes.
