Isn’t that specifically a potato masher that pivots to be more flat? You can see the hinge.

Mine only seems to do it when I have something time sensitive on the stove and I need another tool from that same drawer.

Unrelated: these things also work great for separating slabs of ground meat, especially if it’s not fully thawed.

I though this only happened to me. Glad it doesn’t. No so glad it still happens anyway.
