An attack by Yemeni Houthi rebels on a Belize-flagged ship earlier this month caused an 18-mile (29-kilometer) oil slick, the U.S. military said Saturday.

“The Houthis continue to demonstrate disregard for the regional impact of their indiscriminate attacks, threatening the fishing industry, coastal communities, and imports of food supplies,” it said.

The Associated Press, relying on satellite images from Planet Labs PBC of the stricken vessel, reported Tuesday that the vessel was leaking oil in the Red Sea.

    This is such blatant propaganda

An attack by Yemeni Houthi rebels

The Houthi are the ruling regime in Yemen, not rebels. This is a way to make them sound illegitimate. I don’t like them at all but they did oust foreign imperial powers from their country (Saudi Arabia and the USA).

They claim to be acting over Israel’s war targeting Hamas in the Gaza Strip, however they have frequently targeted vessels with tenuous or no clear links to Israel

They are trying impose sanctions against Israel and say they will stop as soon as there is a ceasefire. They are doing this to win domestic support.

I really wish more countries would impose sanctions against Israel.

Again they are pretty bad islamists and apparently pretty incompetent, but the overall framing here is propaganda.

Calling PBS and AP - two of the most highly regarded news sources - “blatent propaganda” says more about this comment than the article.

      You linked the Wikipedia article:

The Houthi movement is a Shia Islamist political and military organization that emerged from Yemen in the 1990s.

In 2003, influenced by the Lebanese Shia political and military organization Hezbollah, the Houthis adopted their official slogan against the United States, Israel, and the Jews.

In late 2014, the Houthis repaired their relationship with [former president Ali Abdullah] Saleh, and with his help they took control of the capital city. The takeover prompted a Saudi-led military intervention to restore the internationally recognized government, leading to an ongoing civil war

As far as I know, even their allies Iran and North Korea don’t recognize them as the legitimate government of Yemen. I’m not sure where you got your information, but I believe perhaps you misread or misunderstood something that you read.

Maybe they should stop “helping” Palestinians by creating environmental disasters on ships that weren’t even going to Israel.

I mean if we’re going to keep going back in time to blame cause after cause, blame the British for colonizing the part of North America that the U.S. broke away from. Or blame the Spanish for beginning European colonization of the Americas in the first place. Etc.

At some point, you need to blame the person who was there at the time and made the decision to do it.

I thought the US military was the greatest fighting force in the world? How could this have happened?
