Just curious.
I think if he wanted to, he would. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wants to take a break and/or look for a more stable job. I wouldn’t expect anything soon or ever personally.
He said he wants to take a break in one of his detailed posts about the whole state of the app and Reddit. I don’t blame him.
He has a number of successful apps beyond Apollo, so I hope that they will tide him over until his next project. I would love the story arc where he returns and exacts vengeance on Reddit but I would definitely not blame him for never touching social media again.
I just hope he opensources apollo in it’s entirity. I would say there is no reason for him not to. Maybe this app can pick the best parts from the codebase and integrate it into this app.
There’s a great reason for him not to: he can create a paid Lemmy client based on the code. Dude made way too much money on that piece of software to just give it away.
I love Mlem so far but if Apollo came back converted to Lemmy, i would at least try out both.
Definitely. I think once he picks himself up after the initial shock of it all, he’d probably give it a go if demand calls for it. He was very passionate about Apollo, I don’t think it’s going to die here and now, nor do I think he wants it to die.
Tapbots went through the same thing with Tweetbot -> Ivory. It’s just really hard to give up labour of love projects, especially ones that you’ve invested the last decade into.
It seems like a no-brainer to me. He’s already don the hard UI work, adapting to a new API is pretty trivial by comparison.
Eh, it depends. Sometimes a lot of the API is integrated with the components and adapting a new API means tearing apart the entire codebase.
For example, Lemmy-UI has an open PR to replace the websockets API with the HTTP one and it’s a huge change. And that’s just switching a type of API for the same backend – not switching the entire backend!
I hope not. He’s spent a lot of time on it and I’d not want to see Reddit swipe that code.
Fair enough
The beauty of the fediverse is we can tag him here, even tho he only has a mastodon account. Hey @christianselig@mastodon.social, what are your thoughts on lemmy?
Sure, but he’d have to reach out to us first ^^
(This is not an invitation/question to start heckling christian to work with us, leave him to rest a bit, he’s just got a big proud project burned by a greedy company)
This would be almost too good to be true. I would to happily help fund.
in his public communication, he’s expressed that he’s going to be stepping back not only from Apollo, but developing from social media so he can focus on other projects. frankly, I don’t blame him for his experience with Reddit leaving a bad taste in his mouth. But, if he reaches out to us, we’d certainly listen!
I don’t think he’s developing anything reliant on another service again but if he is it’d be nice.
Honestly, he should just take a break, or look for something more stable. He is definitely capable! But Mlem is a great app! I hope it becomes the Apollo of Lemmy
Yeah that would be rad, though I strongly suspect that Christian would be able to just go solo if he wanted it.
Of course it’s possible, but who knows if it will happen. I’ve been working on a little similar native app for iOS, however it’s nowhere near a usable state.
Anything’s possible as long as both parties are interested.
The result can be a beautiful application like Ivory, it would be very nice if you work on it.
This seems like a great idea if he’s interested!
