title, apologies for maybe newbie question
There’s no hard requirement for a Lemmy instance account to be associated with an email address. Mine isn’t, for example.

Yes, you can use the same email to create accounts on different instances, and I’m sure (though I haven’t tried this feature) you could even make multiple accounts with the same email on the same instance. No need to apologize for newbie questions, Lemmy, and federated social media in general, are very new concepts on pretty early tech.

Yes. I have. I used the same email here(lemmy.world) as I did with beehaw.
Works because the other instances don’t learn your mail address. More generally, the account management is the business of the local instance. This way you can use somewhat different identities and/or explore other instances.
Yes. It works fine as the accounts on different instances are not connected.
You can, but it looks like you don’t have to? Once you’re a member of, say, lemmy.world, you can search for and subscribe to lemmy.ml (which has more members and more posts, as far as I can tell).
What’s the reason for multiple accounts if you can access the other instances from the first? Unless it’s a blocked instance?
Changing our minds about what instance to use.
Yes, that part is local to each instance. But the question is why would you want to have several accounts? You can follow content from one instance on another instance, without needing to have accounts everywhere.
