I’d like to start a weekly share your build post every Saturday. This is a place to share your Plex Server builds and get advice on how to optimize/upgrade your server from other users!
I’m running a pretty modest build, just for my personal use:
27" iMac (Mid-2011)
- i7-2600 @ 3.4GHz
- 16 GB memory
- AMD Radeon 6870M 2GB
- 8TB Storage
- macOS 10.13 High Sierra
- PlexPass
What OS are you using? If Linux, how’s the support for AMD graphics?
Thinking about a mini PC build and want to consider AMD vs Intel vs Nvidia (which I think is out) for a small Plex setup.
sorry, forgot to put that in there. I’m running macOS High Sierra 10.13
Earlier this year, I built my new home server from a combination of my old desktop parts as well as new, higher end server parts.
- chassis/PSUs: https://www.aicipc.com/en/productdetail/87
- Intel i9-9900k
- 64GB RAM (Non ECC, but whatever)
- Broadcom/LSI SAS9305-16i HBA card
- 10GbE Card for LAN transfer speeds
Running TrueNAS Scale on NVMe, a mirrored pair of 500GB SATA SSDs for application data, and finally for the main storage: 3 x RAIDZ2 (6 wide) with 16TB HDDs for a max capacity of 174.3TiB of storage (currently just over half full with 6 empty bays left to populate when the time comes).
I’m using quicksync for hardware transcoding and it’s all working great!
holy crap, that’s huge!
I have Plex running on a Raspberry Pi 4 4Gb ram with 6Tb storage.

I’m in a similar boat with an old HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF that was going to be binned at a previous job of mine. It has an i5-3470 and 8 GB of RAM running Windows 10 Pro. It only has a 500 GB internal HDD, so I have an external 6 TB hard drive plugged up to it. No USB 3.0 ports, though.
Similar thought process on the hardware upgrade side, too. It would be wonderful, but with pretty much just my household using it all I’m really missing out on is 4K transcoding.
Currently using a HP craptop with a broken screen from 2016, running Windows 10. AMD A10 chip 6gb RAM 128gb SSD for OS 12tb WD red drive in an enclosure
I was running a Synology DS220j for a couple years but wanted to be able to transcode for streaming outside of my house. It’s just my family using it so I don’t have that many simultaneous streams. So I ended up getting a DS 420+ with more space than I really will need for a while (we will see how long a while lasts!) I have been really happy with it so far.
Plex Machine (runs Plex and Only Plex)
- Ryzen 5 3600x
- 16GB Ram
- 2080 Super
- 500GB SSD
Unraid Machine (migrating to this new hardware this weekend), Runs *arr’s and Storage and other docker things I don’t know what I’m doing with.
- Dell m640 Blade in Dell VRTX Chassis (chassis has 2x m640 and 2x m520 blades)
- Dual Xeon Gold 6134
- 128GB DDR4
- 2x MD1000 15 bay Encolsures through LSI 9206-16E
- 1x 6TB (Parity)
- 11x 4TB
- 3x 3TB
- 14x 2TB
- 1x 2TB (cache)
- 1x 12TB drive I need to fit in there somehow
