I’m running a pretty modest build, just for my personal use:

    27" iMac (Mid-2011)

    • i7-2600 @ 3.4GHz
    • 16 GB memory
    • AMD Radeon 6870M 2GB
    • 8TB Storage
    • macOS 10.13 High Sierra
    • PlexPass

What OS are you using? If Linux, how’s the support for AMD graphics?

Thinking about a mini PC build and want to consider AMD vs Intel vs Nvidia (which I think is out) for a small Plex setup.

Earlier this year, I built my new home server from a combination of my old desktop parts as well as new, higher end server parts.

Running TrueNAS Scale on NVMe, a mirrored pair of 500GB SATA SSDs for application data, and finally for the main storage: 3 x RAIDZ2 (6 wide) with 16TB HDDs for a max capacity of 174.3TiB of storage (currently just over half full with 6 empty bays left to populate when the time comes).

I’m using quicksync for hardware transcoding and it’s all working great!

I’m in a similar boat with an old HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF that was going to be binned at a previous job of mine. It has an i5-3470 and 8 GB of RAM running Windows 10 Pro. It only has a 500 GB internal HDD, so I have an external 6 TB hard drive plugged up to it. No USB 3.0 ports, though.

Similar thought process on the hardware upgrade side, too. It would be wonderful, but with pretty much just my household using it all I’m really missing out on is 4K transcoding.

I was running a Synology DS220j for a couple years but wanted to be able to transcode for streaming outside of my house. It’s just my family using it so I don’t have that many simultaneous streams. So I ended up getting a DS 420+ with more space than I really will need for a while (we will see how long a while lasts!) I have been really happy with it so far.
