A coalition of opposition parties has won a majority of seats in Guinea Bissau’s parliament. The national electoral commission said Thursday that the five-party Terra Ranka coalition won 54 of parliament’s 102 seats in elections held Sunday. The ruling party, MADEM G-15, placed second with 29 seats. The legislative elections were the country’s first since President Umaro Sissoco Embalo dissolved the National People’s Assembly more than a year ago. In the dissolved parliament, the main opposition party, The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), held the majority. It is now part of the coalition along with main opposition party PAIGC.
