I think it’s really dumb that people think 5’7" (170 cm) is short for males.
The typical height of the human male is anywhere from 5’5"–6’0" (165–183 cm).
5’7" isn’t short; it is stupidly average.

Sounds like epic cope from a manlet.
I am 5’6.
Who me? Hell no, bruh, I’m a fucking 5’1" woman. Lol.
I’m a 5’3" woman, but it explains why we don’t think 5’7" is short.
I mean, I’m pretty sure I explained why I don’t think 5’7" is short pretty well. It’s a statistically unsupported claim.
WHAT? I CAN’T HEAR YOU FROM DOWN THERE
^indignant ^squeaks
is bait
Your face is bait.
It depends wildly, but 170cm might be short in the US, especially for some age groups since 175cm seems to be the average for everyone over 20.
From 2015–2018, the average height for males in the United States ages 20 and over was 69 inches (175cm)
For Finland, for males 18+ that average is 177cm. You can be your ass I’m short at 169cm. And you do not want to go “well, in the Philippines I would be above average” lol
Well see that’s why I didn’t go by just US statistics. That link I cited states US statistics as well as worldwide. It would be ignorant of me to make a species-wide claim by using a dataset that only includes 5% of the world population, after all. :)
It does use feets and inches as the measure. That narrows it down a lot.
Could also be the UK, to be fair. The inch units may be different, but both nations use the International Foot.
In any case, I don’t really see the region as being relevant; the meme may be limited to a particular region, but I was objecting more to the whole notion of that stereotype. Which is the same regardless of the unit used.
Edit: A word.
But even the UK is much taller than the global average and you’d be short at 170cm.

How tall or short you’re considered is dependant on that region. People are comparing you to the people around you, not to global average.
People are comparing based on incomplete data. It may be short for one country, but there are humans in other countries too. If those countries population were all shorter than the other, would that make them short? No, it would simply adjust what qualifies as normal.
For a species-wide judgment one needs a species-wide dataset.
Normality is what you have around you. That’s the context people compare things in, usually. Someone short in the UK might be average elsewhere, but when people say “I’m short” or “he’s tall”, it’s with an unsaid for what I typically see around me implied there.
Thats the kind of comeback you come up with 5 hours after the beef in the shower.
Why are you having beef in the shower?
I dont have a lot of time so i eat in the shower.
It’s more convenient to wash your food at the same time you’re already using soap and water.
It’s not such a tall order if you’re quick-witted.
Remember that Wolverine is only 5’3” and he is widely considered the best at what he does (which is not very nice). In addition to this, he is the greatest showman.
I really wish they’d hired someone shorter for the role, I understand they want their actors to all be similar in height for close up shots and we’ve culturally adopted the idea that the good guys are always 6’ tall and only villains are short, but it would have been nice to see Wolverine accurately represented.
Damn I know that he’s short canonically, but I didn’t know that he’s THAT short. O.o
It’s been very strange. When I was a child in school I was not well liked, I was fat neckbeard with no internet because late 80s. Truly I was a sad pile. They called me all manner of hateful things, but it never even occurred to them to call me short, at 5’7".
I rarely feel “short”, only average. Most men seem to be around my height. Some minority of men are taller. I still manage to tower over many women, because women be small, yo. A “tall” girl is roughly my height, so they’re either at eye level or shorter, with the occasional very tall woman in the mix.
I’m tall enough that other people ask for assistance with things on high shelves on a regular enough basis, mostly women.
There is a DRASTIC difference between how the world treats my height versus how the internet shitbag community does. Go figure, abusive people are abusive.
I can only pinpoint the 2000s, and online dating profiles where you can sort by height, plus many women having a height fetish in the exact same way that men will ask people their bra size, and the continuing popularity of the NBA, plus women wanting to have sex with the players, plus their truly freakish heights throwing off the populist curve so that anybody under 6’0 is teeny tiny. Somebody is gonna start squeaking about “6 foot is average” so sure, chief, you win. But there was a time when I just wasn’t particularly tall. Suddenly I am perceived as an actual midget.
It’s just another example of the way people constantly try to find excuses to treat you like shit over just about anything they can think of, it shows how they’re constantly inventing that. It’s one of God’s little reminders to not worry what happens to them.

i mean, it has to be a low blow. A high blow would miss.
I’m sorry.
Pfft, 5"7 losers.
Luckily I’m 5"6.
That’s rude, we prefer height challenged.
I don’t feel particularly challenged. The world is built for people in the 5’5"-6’ range.
I’m 5’3 and same. The only “challenge” I face is taller dudes trying to shit on me about it because they have nothing else to flex on me about and that’s their only resort. Oh, also I’m really bad at basketball.
I use “vertically challenged” all the time lol
i love to pick up small men and hug them
I’m 5’4" and volunteer as tribute… ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
5’5.7“ is standing right behind you
5’6", can I get in line too?
uppies?!!!
I’m 6’7" I pick everyone up and hug them. They just stand there awkwardly most of the time. I tell them I’m XXY and thus need to hug everyone so my female side is happy.
Many people hate this FYI
I’m well aware
Y- you’re a monster
Kicked a tall buddy in the nuts second time he tried this. My man never did it again. Still friends though. Nice guy overall.
akschumaly, you’re slightly taller in the morning
In both directions 😏
I’m 5’11", but don’t consider 5’7" short.
Me too, and I’m 5’12"
I’m 5’14", but find this irrelephant
I’m 5’15, and I also like irresescent elephants.
Same. It’s statistically average. Plus, judging and demeaning people over their height is pretty messed up. Nothing anyone can do about that, outside of invasive surgery that carries substantial long-term health risks. The world takes all kinds - short kings, tall kings, in-between kings.
I’m 6’-7" and consider everyone short, until I come across someone 6’-5" or taller and then I’m like “holy shit that guy is tall”. Has to do with your eyes being a few inches lower than the top of your head. I’m just glad I clear standard 6’-8" doorways, can pay for exit row and somehow a Mazda CX-5 fits me comfortably.
Don’t tell my wife I’m 5 7 😭
I know, her Tinder profile is quite brutal in the requirements.
I dont even care about this meme, what coat is Robert Pattinson wearing?
I was thinking it’s just some old WW1/WW2 stuff from some movie he was in but nope lol
For his front-row appearance, Pattinson wore a double-faced coat designed by Dior men’s creative director Kim Jones. There were several standout draped outerwear pieces and blazers on the runway, and Pattinson’s coat mimicked that idea with its double-breasted style and attached thick wool scarf. (Call it a half coat, half blanket.) Underneath, the actor wore a chocolate leather jacket for extra warmth, and finished it off with light brown khakis and hefty patent boots. If any man can pull off this kind of tricky layering, it’s Pattinson.
I was thinking it was some military surplus stuff but nope, peak of fashion Dior stuff. Lmao
I am mildly annoyed when I can’t buy a piece of clothing I see in movies.
Was also interested in it. Looks awesome.
Everybody sitting here being offended on 5’7" dudes’ behalf: thanks, but we’re laughing our asses off at it! I love being a short king
Some people are really, really focused on their height and see it as a big source of issues in their lives. I don’t know if it’s a bigger thing in the US (where most of those complaining seem to be from) or maybe I’ve just been lucky, but I don’t remember getting too much shit for it.
In the US, there are constant reminders everywhere. Sometimes even lemmy usernames point out our slight stature.
Occasionally you’ll meet someone who just can’t see you as a full adult, if that makes sense. Even in a professional environment I’ve had people try to tell me they aren’t convinced of my abilities until someone who I work with confirms what I’m saying, with no other logical reason to mistrust my claims outside of identifying height instinctually with good moral standing or intelligence.
It’s mostly in the dating world though, thankfully it usually presents itself as an issue immediately and you can just use it as a sort of filter. The women who truly don’t care are rare but at least you know they’re cool with it immediately.
Humans take data and build narratives. Narratives are easier to process vs raw data. So you have raw data that includes a lot of pain and the narrative is built. New data has no chance against old data since every time old data was recalled it is copied. The happy moment is stomped down by the miserable moment that was remembered a 1000x.
I am not saying it isn’t a real issue, I am saying that for the people it impacts, it impacts them a great deal.
Maybe we shouldn’t treat people like crap and maybe we should teach people to deal with pain as it is not based on whatever fictional narrative they built to justify it.
(hits up Wolfram|Alpha for a conversion) I mean, 1,70 m is not that small. It’s fairly average, even in The Netherlands. Speaking from experience.
That’s 13cm shorter than the average in the Netherlands. Never been in the Netherlands, but even in Norway where the average is 181cm, 170cm is definitely on the short end. In the US the average is only 177 so it’s not really short over the pond though.
I was initially thinking of adding “but who really cares about height in real life though?”, but then I remembered that height discrimination goes beyond women in the dating scene and is a serious issue.
It’s small. I’m 1m70 and here in the south of France, most teenage boys are taller than me, and I’d say about half of adult women are my size or close. 1m80 is the new normal size.
Tussle their hair, smile and say “sure thing big guy. Want some chocolate milk?” And put your hands on your hips. It will make their day.

Haha! Of course sport! Anything for my big guy. Say, while we’re at it, how about we make a day of it? We just have to make a quick stop at the town office to renew your SSI information for your…condition…
