Is there anything in the pipeline that will enable sorting the communities in the Community list by the columns they have listed there?

Yeah, it would be really nice to be able to look at the “popular” communities by sorting by most-subscribed, most posts, and most comments.

Adding onto this: It would also be nice if it was easy to search in a communities list, and just filter the list there, instead of being redirected to the main search function.

I’m familiar with that, does it have the sorting options that OP and I are discussing? It looks to me like the sort order is both hard-coded and confusing, although less-popular communities do seem to be at the bottom… I can’t identify any specific order that entries are listed in.

I do not think that you can change the sorting order, but I think the communities are sorted by the number of subscribers. So it at least should be close to what you were searching to find the most popular communities. Not the perfect solution, but maybe it helps anyway.

I think the communities are sorted by the number of subscribers.

It’s definitely not a strict sort by subscriber count. The top-5 communities in order from 1 to 5 have: 2491, 4461, 1414, 1138, 7109. It is sort of roughly ordered by some measure of popularity, but not one I can follow, the second entry is more popular than the first in every metric shown.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a super useful service and one I use and recommend. But I was wishing for more sortability when I was setting up my subscriptions the other day, and if the number of communities grows that will be even more useful.

Strange, when I made my reply and checked the website, at least the first 7 communities were sorted by subscribers. After refreshing the page now, the sorting is all over the place.

And yes, it would really be nice to be able sort the communities by various conditions. At least the search function is quick and shows instant results, which is really nice.

I’m new to the fediverse and as I was looking for new communities to subscribe to, I missed that feature as well. What I found more confusing is that the cursor actually changes to that “click me” finger when hovering over a column title like it would be able to sort. That’s why I first thought, it isn’t working only for me.

Searching through the github repo I found this issue of three days ago which asks for this feature. OP has given a work around there: You can filter for your instance and sort the communities at https://lemmyverse.net/communities
