I think the neolib turn with Thatcher/Reagan really did kill any remnants of empathy or compassion that might have still existed in them. Growing up in the midst of extreme cold war propaganda started this process. Anyone that expresses any leftish ideas must be considered hypersus in their view.
They really believe ‘the suffering/cruelty is the point’ because it ‘builds character’ or whatever. They think they are making the world better through their malice.
