I thought it just means passionate, is there more to it than that?
E: seems like it also means agitator or trouble maker, TIL.
Personally I’d take it as a compliment, but I can see what you mean about it being problematic.
Not familiar with that host but he definitely was at least going for “visibly uncomfortable”. Whether that was purely for entertainment or real or whatever, “firebrand” is not at all a compliment in that case.
But also… it is completely accurate for what she was saying. She was speaking a very left-wing perspective regarding the inherent injustice of a hereditary monarchy whose (brain farting: Fancy term for “justification to rule” that is usually divinity based) is based solely on being warlords a few centuries ago. And she lightly calls for revolution. That is a “left wing firebrand” by definition and is only a negative if people don’t want that.
Definitely. I want to say there was some fancy latin term (probably “dei grati” but that doesn’t sound right) but that is indeed the concept I was thinking of.

I assumed from what I know of him he would agree with her, and a quick look brought up a recent interview with him titled Harry Hill: 'I am a bit anti-monarchy at the moment, so it was almost certainly a reflection of what he assumes the general public’s/his bosses reaction would be, not his own.
Makes sense. He is INCREDIBLY abuser adjacent (to the point it mostly feels like people forgot to name him during that special last year) but noel fielding has given some decent interviews about how manufactured the hosting tends to be and even the stupidity of needing to record “american” versions of a lot of clips.
Had a bit of a laugh at the “we’ve never had one of those on bake off before” bit. Since they have definitely had some comedians and entertainers who have said MUCH stronger statements. Just… not while they are getting a paycheck for flailing about while trying to follow a recipe card.
And yeah. It is fascinating, and kind of horrifying, how hardcore the royalist propaganda has gotten since slick lizzie keeled over. Any time you mock the royal nonce or acknowledge the active censorship by both media and law enforcement you get the swarm of royalists coming out of the woodwork. Even on lemmy.
Tangential: But it has been REALLY fun to watch the “silent” purging happening at sites like resetera. Whether it was pretending that sexism is the reason they cracked down on the c-word that makes women angry (which I don’t disagree with but it was very clearly being used by brits and commonwealth folk to shit on the UK government) or how people who are critical of brexit tend to suddenly be banned for “being an alt”.
It has been an open secret for a decade or two that russel brand was a real fucked up individual. Last year-ish, Channel 4 et al dug up the receipts on that and did a really solid piece on just what a rapist piece of shit he is and now brand is about as toxic as jimmy saville (so basically wait until the heat dies down, put the rapist back on tv, and explain that he needs to make all his victims sign NDAs. But right now it is hurting his bottom line).
But what wasn’t covered is that, again, this was an open secret. Anyone with any awareness of UK media knew brand was a piece of shit and many female comedians outright “vague posted” about him over the years. And a lot of that is because noel fielding and russel brand were infamous for “partying” together, “chasing” teenage girls, making abusive/rape “jokes” to everyone around them, constantly cheating on their girlfriends, etc. They even had some… really fucked up even for the time nicknames.
One of my favorite female british comedians (who deleted the tweet after getting massive amounts of harassment) summed it up with (paraphrasing): “Good job but you forgot his goth doppelganger”
Wow that’s fucked up. I stopped keeping up with tv and pop culture stuff over a decade ago now and had no idea about most of this.
In hindsight, I really can’t say I’m surprised Feilding and Brand were hanging out, or that both are misogynistic rapists. I knew far too many guys just like them back in the 2010’s and it was very normslised behaviour.
A lot of men behave that way and get away with it their whole lives as they aren’t famous, so I’m glad that at least it’s public information and they’re being called out in this case, even if it’s not amounting to much beyond that.
Glad to know others have also noticed Noel’s glaringly obvious absence from the whole abuse conversation… I’d not heard the interview you mean, but it doesn’t surprise me at all. And lets be fair - on a kids version they’re going to have to be a hundred times more careful about what they say…
I’m sure some of the regular contestants have been leftists too (I’m no good with names but a few faces come to mind), they just never get asked about it!
I avoid a lot of the places where I would have to put up with royalist opinion, so I’ve not come across too much of it but again, it’s no surprise, when you’re made to believe that the monarchy is part of who you are it can be hard to hear anything negative said about it… But also, there’s no denying the shift in mood, and hopefully it keeps shifting and who knows, maybe Charlie will be the last ever king… 🤞🤞
Never heard of resetera, google says gaming forum, not the first place I’d think of as pro-monarchy, but you learn something new everyday lol

I thought a decent number of people in the UK thought that same way.
In modern society, it’s absurd that the UK is governed by a monarch. Even if it’s just on paper and a ceremony.

I think the term you are looking for the divine right of kings.

Can someone explain what this is about please? And Noel Feilding to, going by another comment?
(I don’t watch this show and am confused)
