This reminds me of the Romanian neofascist on Reddit who seriously argues that the Third Reich was ‘antifa’ because the Reich lethally purged some self‐identified fascists in 1934. Everything that you learned is immediately invalidated by that. Anticommie infighting = antifascism. If that won’t convince, I don’t know what will convince you!
Of course, there came a time he crossed the moral event horizon and was a Nazi in name only. If you reach the point in your life where you have done so much to save tens of thousands from death camps, that those people collect the few gold teeth they have in order to make you a ring inscribed with a line from the Torah so you don’t forget the lives you’ve saved? You are no Nazi anymore. He also refused any war reparations or donations for his actions, and lived a simple small life advocating against Nazism till his death. In comparison to his decadent, wealthy, and pro fascistic life before the war.
Also they did figure it out, that’s how he lost pretty much everything. He gave essentially every last penny of his fortune and anything valuable away in order to bribe SS officers, Gestapo investigators, and high ranking Nazi officials to avoid execution and get them to send him more people to “work” in his factories. Greed is a powerful motivator to keep your mouth shut.
His sabotage was also difficult to detect as well, since one example was that his factories would create a significant amount of “dead shells” that could still be fired perfectly fine by artillery, tanks, and planes, but the explosive head would be rendered inert and harmless. Something that’s completely undetectable unless you take the shell apart and anyways, how do you know which shell is Schindler’s when it’s mixed in with all the others?
