Just trying to kickstart a conversation on how to get the transition done as well as possible now that @Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de has become the moderator of the community

  • Make the community more recognisable: Headers and community name and sidebar information
    • Maybe just copy straight from what lemmy.film had for now (which we can still access on our own instances)
  • Post in the new communities community.
    • Even though it’s not strictly a new community, I think it counts and should be posted there … recovering and transitioning “lost” communities like this should be heavily supported IMO
  • Post warnings about the death of the instance and the shift here in the old lemmy.film community caches on each instance.
    • This one will require more work. But I’m thinking a community effort can go pretty far and is also an interesting challenge for the fediverse.
    • Each instance that had a subscriber to the community will have a cache of that community despite the original instance going dark. In fact, to all users on instances other than lemmy.film, it will look like everything is fine and the communities are still running but nothing has been posted for a while. In fact, all such users can post to these cached communities just fine and get comments and upvotes from people on their own instance, with the only problem being that none of that activity will federate because federation goes through the original home of the community.
    • This means many subscribers to the original community may not really know it’s gone dark or that anyone is trying to do something about it. This seems like something that should be addressed by some feature but that’s a conversation for another time.
    • SO … what we can do to spread the word is … post to the cache of the lemmy.film community on as many instancies as possible a warning of the instance’s death and an invitation to come here.
    • The more people helping with this the better.
    • I’m thinking that we encourage people to check their own instance and any instance that they have an alternative on and ask that everyone pass the same encouragement on … essentially aiming for some form of virality.
    • We can use https://fedidb.org/software/lemmy to guide target instances by size. Obvious first targets would be:
    • Posting to this effect … an active community move across instances … can be done in other communities too in order to get as much pollination of the idea as possible. The new-communities community being an obvious one, lemmy and fediverse communities too I’d imagine and I’m sure others will have suggestions too.
    • The message should probably be as simple as possible:

This instance (lemmy.film) and its communities have died! (sadly!)

  • Please go to !movies@lemm.ee. We’re rebuilding there!
  • Spread the word! Please post this information to any/all lemmy.film communities your instance has subscribed to!
  • Please post this to any other instances you have alternative accounts on create as much reach as possible!
  • Moderators wanted too!

Just to clarify, the main community I was implicitly referring to in the body of the main post was !moviesandtv@lemmy.film. This was the only community I interacted with from lemmy.film and from what I could gather the most popular one by far (?).

I get that impression too. It was definitely the most active of the ones I had joined.
