At this point it looks like the only entities really serious about developing nuclear fusion are China and Bill Gates. Of course one wants it to benefit humanity, the other wants more intellectual property to lord over everyone else.
China may well beat the Americans to the moon at this point as well. I imagine most technological advances in every field will come out of China, seeing as they’re leading the world in patent applications and the US all but refuses to share research.
The US is also chasing academics of Chinese origin out of US universities and research institutions with new yellow peril type propaganda and racist witch hunts.

I don’t like patents.
Neither do I, but they’re a fact of life right now and at least a superficial metric to compare how “innovative” one entity is over another.
There’s literally an act of Congress that prohibits NASA from collaborating with Chinese scientists or organizations.
