am willing to clarify what you find most confusing

I’ll try and give as good a rundown as I can (and I have no idea how technically inclined you are—if I come across as patronizing, I apologize in advance!) I’m also assuming that you have experience with Reddit.

You are signed up on the lemm.ee instance, which means that you must post/comment from that root domain, or that lemm.ee should be the leftmost text in your url.

Lemmy operates on a similar idea to email, where it doesn’t matter where you sign up to start emailing, only that you stay on the same website to email even if you want to communicate with people on other companies’ emails.

This is comparable to staying on mail.google.com to send emails to someone on yahoo or hotmail or whatever. We’ll stay with this analogy for now: lemm.ee = gmail, and other instances (lemmy.world, lemmy.blahaj.zone, etc.) = yahoo.

— Everyone with an email address will be able to communicate to other email address holders in an email-like fashion. — Similarly, everyone with a Lemmy account will be able to communicate with other Lemmy users in a Lemmy-like fashion, so long as both Lemmy instances are federated with each other.

What is confusing currently is that every version of Lemmy looks largely the same, but the storage in those other Lemmy instances does not store your account information.

And, to complicate this further: Lemmy does not convert links to other Lemmy posts in other instances so that it leads to your instance’s version: as a loose analogy, it would be like if trying to reply to an email, sent from a yahoo account, would send you to Yahoo Mail (the website), even if you were signed into Gmail. This is why it looks like you’re signed out of Lemmy even if everything looks similar—you were taken out of Gmail and dumped into Yahoo Mail. You need to go back to Gmail’s version of the email thread and reply from there.

Having this idea working is still a work in progress, and I’m not 100% sure how they’ll be able to sort that out. What you can try and do in the meantime is to copy the URL of the thread that you’re trying to reply to, and search for that URL in your instance.

To zoom out a bit more, social networks like Mastodon and Kbin use a similar protocol, but not quite—and this is where the email analogy kind of falls apart. As Kbin and Lemmy operate very similarly, the developers of both have done a little work to allow for users of the other to connect/post to the “other side”, think of them as translators so that the functionality is largely there, but there may be a few extra glitches here and there: you can view kbin instances from lemmy, for example, but only the posts that come after a user from the Lemmy instances subscribes to a Kbin magazine, or vice versa.

Subreddits = Communities (Lemmy) = Magazines (Kbin)

I share the same sentiment—and I can’t tell if it’s because it’s the newest, shiny thing and most of us feel like we’re on some frontier of something greater, but I do feel like we’re valuing each others’ input a lot more than the Reddit baseline.

I realize that’s kind of antithetical to what you were saying earlier in that there’s an end-all-be-all kind of comment, but I’d like to think that it’s because we’ve all matured a bit during this time and that this fediverse kick is enough to shift our thinking to remind us that there is an individual behind each of these posts, and there really shouldn’t be comments that shut out most avenues of conversation.

This has gotten ranty, but I’d just like to close off with the pettier thought that we’re all just being slightly chattier than normal simply because we want to drive content away from the alien site. Either way, I hope this sentiment continues.

Careful VRAM monitoring raises my eyebrows just a little for a game like Hi-Fi Rush, but it makes perfect sense that Tango Dreamworks would have learned from their experience in Ghostwire: Tokyo, even if they don’t share much in structure or artstyle—it seems the streaming and asynchronous shader compilation tech wouldn’t have been a thing in HFR were it not for G:T. Very interesting! Can’t see why this post has a negative score.

Using this thread to start some discussion about the upcoming expansion: what are you looking forward to most? Will you be playing on release?

Personally, I’m anxious to see how the core game will change with the announced changes—I was largely happy with the plot of the original, but the game got too easy and the skill tree was uninspired. Still, I won’t care too much if it’s bad or good; once I have the time and money for a rig that crushes overdrive mode I don’t think I’ll care about game mechanics too much.

I wonder what this means for Frostbite—is F1 safe from a Frostbite port?

Found out about Oracle’s free VPS offering, which I’m so excited about! I’ve always wanted to learn more about system administration, and everything going on with lemmy + reddit has been kind of the perfect storm for me to experiment. I’m hoping this period of general optimism about this new platform stays for a good while longer.

The fact that instagram users can migrate their accounts to Threads (presumably with very little configuration) is huge. I don’t feel like it would impact this side of the internet as much but twitter could look like a very different place a year from now. Doubt they’ll be trying to federate.
