It’s weird abandoning something I’ve used for nearly a decade, where I’ve made some genuine friendships and gained a lot of knowledge. Reddit has been a shitshow for years though and I use it less and less, particularly for hobbies (my main use case). I’ve started going back to old-school forums for a lot of things.
The federated approach will definitely take me some time to get used to, but I think once I settle in it’ll be fine. My main concern is that if a particular host decides to stop upkeeping their server for whatever reason, it just vanishes and nukes all the accounts made with it. That doesn’t inspire confidence in any particular community’s longevity and makes me somewhat hesitant to engage.
Am I going to regret signing up to lemmy.ml rather than a more specific instance? Still wrapping my head around all this. Could I sign up on another instance w/ the same username if that instance wasn’t federated?
