  • thank you!! I am new to this school, and was shocked to see the popular support already existing. Comrades here have been struggling for a long time. I am disgusted by the 400k salary of our administrator while international student workers have had to choose between doctor visits and daycare. Leaders of the movement seem to avoid discussing personal beliefs, but I am curious whether they have long supported worker organization or merely were brought to this in desperation from the pay cuts and layoffs resulting from COVID-19. Students on international visa are prohibited from non-school work and with pay cuts or layoff may be forced into poverty. This is horrible, because remember, these are not lazy people by any means. Graduate student workers are some of the hardest working people I have met: my colleagues are studying, researching, instructing courses, grading exams/lab reports, and many have children at home.

  • Well said! Even worse, in the USA, imprisonment is a form of slave labor for people of color and poor whites. Companies can profit from using prisoners to work for pennies an hour, not to mention that the wages prisoners earn may be needed to be spent on basic necessities that they are denied, and lastly, prisoners do not have labor rights that other workers do. Revenge and exploitation are the key components of many forms of the injustice system

  • I agree with your sentiment, but I worry that sometimes outrage can lead to quick demand for death penalty, and this could inhibit justice. For example, in a heinous crime (child abuse or torture) a suspect may not get a fair trial when there is (understandable) outrage and demand for punishment and suspect may be wrong person

  • Why was this downvoted by somebody? Yes I hope that we continue to grow! I have seen promotion on Reddit, which is nice. Greater migration may require momentum. Keep in mind that Chapo.chat is also a Lemmy instance and saw a surge at its creation (i do not endorse that instance or its pervasive liberalism). I am hopeful with the news of the Lemmur (Lemmy phone app) and we can all do our part as well to keep the discussions going. There is a lemmygrad chat on Element I think. We could become closer friends with more activity there I suppose

  • Yes! and union! we must be brave, comrade. I too am fearful of the consequences of communist allegiance, but there is no hope without standing together. Practice opsec and prioritize your own safety. As others have said, there is a big difference between a book club and militant group in the woods. Please let us know your thoughts in the replies. We hope we can help you on your path forward!

We love you all and so does God!
