Calling Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya a leader of opposition in a democratic country is more than questionable. It’s not only that many candidates were banned from running for president, her husband thrown into jail, she being threatened, having to send her children abroad so that they wouldn’t be harmed…she is generally believed to be the winner of the elections.
Belarus is a dictatorship. And she is the symbol of freedom.
Saying that inviting her to a summit for democracy is a mistake is, ironically, a mistake.

I’m not saying the US has the ideal democracy. But it must try - when we take only democratic countries into consideration, it has the highest GDP, if I’m not mistaken, it’s almost as high as EU’s. Attempting to unite its democratic allies, to strengthen the cooperation, is a good and realistic start.
The claim of there being no proof for China misusing the technologies is dubious as well. Here: Source
Moreover, even if the claim was incorrect, I believe we have a moral duty to stand by those who might be oppressed, who else can?
The part where Quaddafi is mentioned makes it seem like the man did nothing wrong, was working on making his country better and certainly not shooting civilians who dared to stand against him.

Look, I am a fairly left-leaning person but I am also a stout believer in democracy. As a matter of fact, our democracies are undergoing a hard time in this era of hybrid war. If we are to survive and thrive without repressing ideas, we need to remain civil and listen to each other and argue in good faith.
