Lol I love that argument because it means that we can finally accept that the US is less more sexist than Mexico, which just elected a Jewish woman president. Never mind she and her party just spent the last n years pursuing policies that made material differences in the lives of ordinary families. That’s beside the point.

We don’t listen to the news or talk about the shitty policies that both sides proposed, so for him the election is just a novel concept. He understands the concept of “American democracy” (puking emojis here etc) as presented to first graders, and likes the idea of voting. So that’s fine, whatever. Last night when I was putting him to sleep he said, “You know, the good thing about Trump winning is that he can’t win again. Sometimes a bad thing can be a good thing.” Which is exactly the sort of metacognitive, dealing with life evens skill I want him to have so fuck everyone and everything else, I think he’s OK.

I think the big thing here is eventually helping him to understand the difference between establishment electoral politics and people powered movements.

My first grader’s teacher is a big lib and has been really into Kamala, so my kid is, too. I let it be because his teacher is also sort of prickly (“sensitive”)and I don’t want her getting on his ass if he says anything about lib world.

So that’s not fun.

Any book or story recommendations about stopping when asked to do so by an adult or friend? Our 6yo tends to get really focused on things and not stop…but it’s also slipped into “cleverly” ignoring requests. It’s getting to be an issue at home and school and I’d like to work on it with him in a way that isn’t overly top down (“BECAUSE I SAID SO DAMNIT”)

He loves reading and to be read to, so stories that include this could be a big help if anyone has a suggestion.

My youngest continues to be super sweet to everyone. I love seeing the person he’s becoming.

Yeah our first slept with us until ~2.5. Started by having him do naps in his own bed with me sitting there. (This was during covid lockdowns). Then it was me sleeping with him at night and gradually transitioning into him getting to sleep without me being in the room. Really liked the book It’s Never Too Late to Sleep Train.

Oh damn thanks for pointing this out! Michael Rosen has written a bunch of great kids books. I got the audiobook (it’s like $2 on audible rn) to listen to with my kids and will look for a print copy.
