I’m not very familiar with the “history” of the time period, but I know Abraham was a Canaanite. Many Jews (and Arabs) could trace lineage to Canaan, before the collapse.

  • I believe it largely has to do with the peace agreement forming between Israel and Saudi Arabia combined with other factors in the region like the political instability in Israel and the protests that were ongoing, the Sukkot festival being a “good” target for terror, the holy holidays meaning many soldiers would be home with their families, and the soldiers were more heavily populated around the West Bank for Bebe’s bullshit up there, leaving the south more vulnerable, at least it seems that way to me.

But this is the end of a “two state solution” being possible. Look at Netanyahu’s tweet:

The IDF will immediately use all its strength to destroy Hamas’s capabilities. We will destroy them and we will forcefully avenge this dark day that they have forced on the State of Israel and its citizens. As Bialik wrote: ‘Revenge for the blood of a little child has yet been devised by Satan’.

All of the places which Hamas is deployed, hiding and operating in, that wicked city, we will turn them into rubble.

I say to the residents of Gaza: Leave now because we will operate forcefully everywhere.

And the Israeli ambassador to the U.S.'s speech was very clear, he said diplomacy is over. That today changes everything and the old way with peace talks and humanitarian aid is over.

  • Well said.

Unfortunately, that is where we are heading for sure. My cousin was just called to fight from the US. They’re mobilizing their entire military and calling all reserves. They have declared they will not stop until they “obliterate” Hamas. The US is moving the USS Gerold R. Ford aircraft carrier and several warships into the mediterranean as a show of solidarity, to ward off anyone else thinking they can take advantage of the situation. This is a fucking disaster. The entire country is now unified with one mission. It’s terrifying for everyone in the region. This conflict will be long and many will die. Gaza is one of the absolute worst places to fight. 2 million people in 140 sq miles.

It is very improbable that there will be a collision caused by a starlink satellite. While Musk is certainly an idiot who can’t be trusted, there are intelligent people who work for SpaceX who have considered all this and more before launching their satellites.

Elon Musk is a total fool and an idiot, but like others said, this article is hogwash. The satellites do not pose a risk for Kessler Syndrome due to their LEO. They will fall to earth and burn up. They also maneuver to avoid collisions. It is highly unlikely to contribute anything at all to Kessler Syndrome.

Additionally, how are they comparing carbon footprint? Article is behind paywall. The internet infrastructure on earth didn’t pop into existence out of thin air, carbon neutral. The trucks and ships used to lay wire, the mining and manufacturing of everything involved in the process, creates carbon for both. The carbon that would be created to provide access to rural areas as an alternative. If you are going to count the carbon to make and fuel spaceships, you must also count the carbon to make the ships that lay and maintain undersea cables and trucks that maintain cable on land. The SpaceX ships are largely reusable as well, so the carbon to make the ships also needs to be split among its voyages to space just as a ship at sea makes multiple trips.

  • No, the opposite, actually. It makes me sad that people only care about what they think and not about what it costs, which makes me feel scared and insecure. I have extended family in Israel who have a mix of views on the situation.

Israel has been oppressing Palestinians. They have been building illegal settlements in the West Bank, pushing people from their homes. Netanyahu is a fascist, he wishes to be king. Don’t forget that the citizens have been protesting, the country has been divided. This will unite them under hate and fear. Hamas is a terrorist organization who kidnaps, rapes, and slaughters citizens. They make any negotiations for long term peace impossible. The result of this is pain and death for innocent Palestinians and Israelis. Israel will respond with force. It is the reality. Yet people all over Lemmy are cheering as if this is a good thing, as if anything good will come of this. It’s sad, and it isn’t going to make anything better for anyone.

I’m sorry your comment became the target of my frustrations with what is going on. It’s just that the situation is more complex than good guys and bad guys.

  • This is the absolute truth. People on here are nuts cheering on Hamas. Keep defending terrorists. This will be devastating to everyone living in Gaza. The Israelis are going to want to level Gaza. There are 2 million people in Gaza, one of the most densely populated places on the planet. Hamas’ actions today have signed the death of possibly tens of thousands of people.

I don’t like the Israeli government. I don’t like Hamas. Both sides are bad and do very bad things. But there are millions of people living in this region and the escalation today was done by Hamas and it puts these millions of people at risk. They went to a concert and kidnapped young adults, basically children. Slaughtered civilians at bus stops and in their homes and these are the pictures the world will see. The world powers have made it clear that Israel has their full support. Like it or not. Israel has no choice but to wipe out Hamas. Politically, Netanyahu needs to show strength, his life depends on this victory. This is his chance to unite Israel under him when mere weeks ago there were protests in the streets of Jerusalem. It’s an opportunity for him to sieze power and protect himself from the punishment for his crimes.

This will end horribly for the Palestinian people more than anyone else. Israel will lose much less people, but they’re all still people. All people dying. But make no mistake, Israel will hit back way harder, and they will win.

This shitty world was better yesterday before this happened.
