I am currently in a fairly extensive exploration expedition and get to sell my bio data whenever I get within 1000 ly of a carier. (1000 is the magic number for me)
This time I had for 4 billions worth (incl bonus). I haven’t sold any cartographic data yet as I’m saving it for someone who mayne can use it for bgs when I get back
Oh look, I did the circuit around the Galaxy… just 3 more jumps… and into the sun
Sorry. What do you mean?
We are doing a round-trip around the galaxy yeah, but we are only approximately 1/5 into the route. I started off with a 3 bil ballance so credit wise I think I’m happy. Also I have found a lot of cool bios and registered some new variations into the codex of bios thatbhabe not yet been seen at those locations.
Haven’t played in years but there’s nothing like dying out in the deep. So frustrating losing all the scans, etc.
Man I had so much fun with that game.
It turns out that fdev will usually restore any lost data in this case but only once.
I did die at the start of the expedition and lost data worth 2 bil. I was devastated and very happy when fdev informed me that they could restore the lost data.
Now I realise that i could have lost way more and that it was not that much of a loss really.

Do you play in VR or on a monitor? I was playing in VR a lot, using a HOTAS and voice attack, with the Brent Spiner voice pack, but now I’m 3 hours worth of travel from where I need to go, and I just don’t feel like doing it. It feels too much like work. I wish there was an autopilot for such situations. There certainly would be in real life.
I often play in vr but not always because it is a quick way to get burned out with the game. Although putting video on an overlay somewhere on the dashboard (or usually ny characters feet) helps.
Not VR but used to have triple screens hotas, voice attack with 10 voices and a lot of other third party programs.
I left ED for some time and I am now back with 2 screens, gamepad and the third party apps. I don’t really use voice attack for exploring though so I don’t run that at the moment. I really enjoy Exploration Buddy and EDdiscovery though.
Where are you at now? Have you tried plotting a neutron route? Have you looked into picking a hike with a flight carier?
That said, 3 hours is not too bad. Enjoy the trip, do an FSS in every system you visit and maybe make some credits looking for cool bios. It could be a vert profitable trip even though you’re far away.
Idk anything about neutron routes or carriers. I’ll look that up. Thank you!
Neutron routes are routes that lead you through neutrons stars. You can use them to super charge your FSD and do substantially longer jumps. My regular jump range is 52 ly but with a super charged FSD I can do 200ly.
If you use any third party programs, edjp can help you by calculating a route and actually adding the next destination into your clipboard so you only have to past it into the search field of your star map. You can also use the splansh website for planning the route itself
In regards to fleet cariers, there are loads of them spread out across the galaxy. If you are lucky, you can find one, dock on it and get off when they are closer to your destination. I believe that they have a 500 ly jump range.
Where are you currently located? Some areas have more traffic than others. Also if you feel like getting the most out of your trip through undiscovered space, feel free to join one of the many exploration minded groups. I am in one called EDEN. It is not as such a squadron but more a group of indipendemt explorers who just like flying alone in empty space but like sharing what they find with others who appreciate the finds.
You can see the current expedition on EDSM here

Awesome! Thanks for the information. I’d have to log in to see where I am, which I can’t do right now because we just moved and I haven’t set my computer up yet. But I know I’m near where the profitable passenger routes are, according to the Internet. I flew out there to try to earn some quick credits, but I’m bored with that and want to get back over to where I started and get my Viper for some combat missions. I didn’t actually make very many credits, since I don’t have much rep with this faction yet. I can’t get rep quickly without a combat ship. They don’t sell any combat ships and equipment that I can afford near this system. So I’m kinda just stuck and bored, unless I can get my ships over here. I haven’t played multiplayer yet. I’m not good enough to fight dedicated players and don’t want to lose my ships that I jumped all over tarnation outfitting. It’s a really neat game though, and I’ve probably spent 100 hours in VR flying around doing a variety of things.
I bought this on a steam sale several years ago and go really overwhelmed, considering giving it a go again, any beginners tips would be appreciated.
Although there is a lot of lore in this game, there is no story. You make your own story. You will experience a lot of stuff and learn even more.
My main advice would be not to rush it. Just have fun and play the game. The game won’t help you much. It has a short tutorial but it mostly feels like learning to swim in the titanics swimming pool.
If you can, find a small group of players to join. It’s always nicer to share your experiences and finds with others. Also they will help you a lot with what needs helping with.
Lastly, you’ll be spending a lot of time on YouTube and third party wiki pages learning about this game. . Writing this, I realise that it’s not a game for everyone. It can take up a lot of your time but I also feel that it is such a huge game with so much to experience
