Kbin is a modular, decentralized content aggregator and microblogging platform running on the Fediverse network. The initiative aims to promote a free and open internet.
I just joined Kbin. How is the name supposed to be pronounced? Like cabin?
Hi, good to see you here :) I honestly have no idea what the pronunciation is. It’s a reference to the Linux /sbin, a container for things that are important to you. This is intentional, I want /kbin to be perceived as each individual instance. Each instance is different. Each community is different. That’s what’s cool about the Fediverse.
I just like the fact that it sounds like a piece of KDE software 😅😅😅
I do “K” “Bin”, and then read it together. That’s how I’ve been pronouncing it and imagined others were doing the same?
@ernest I’ve been exploring alternatives to Reddit for a week now, and I’m loving Kbin. I miss more presence from the Spanish-speaking community, but there will be time for them to discover the advantages of the Fediverse. Congratulations on the initiative, and long live the project.
There are a few servers on mastodon (choose Spanish as language) and a post on lemmy (not sure if that’s a good instance). Currently, I’m learning Spanish, so I follow from a few places and my feed is interesting…. Some English, some Spanish, a bit of German.
@Cocoa6790
Yes, I’ve been on Mastodon for quite some time now. There’s a significant presence of Spanish speakers there (masto.es). But I was looking for content on Lemmy or Kbin. Nevertheless, I have no problem with English. Thank you.
Hello!
Sorry for the noob question. Whats the difference between kbin and lemmy? is it a fork? Im beginning to lose track the deeper I go into the fediverse.Thanks,
Not a fork (and someone can probably give a better answer) but kbin and Lemmy both share the same structure for content (called ActivityPub)
This allows you to view lemmy posts on kbin and kbin posts on lemmy (as well as many other websites using the same protocol)
Is there a way to see the list of groups (not sure what the name is… The things that are like “sub-reddits” lol)
yes, here: https://kbin.social/magazines
Ah, they’re called “magazines”, i see. But that list seems pretty baren. Does it show groups/magazines from other instances or only the Local ones? Does it shows groups/magazines from Lemmy?
@ernest Literally just discovered your account and this post while looking for information on Kbin as I look to sign up! What luck! Thanks!
Welcome aboard. You just need to arm yourself with a pinch of patience ;-)
@ernest Now *that* I have in abundance! Especially for things like this. Fantastic work!
