With only 91 days left before launch, today we are releasing the 1st Beta of Plasma 6.
https://kde.org/announcements/megarelease/6/beta1/
This is the time when we call on all testers to download and install it, and stress-test all its features.
WARNING: This is #betasoftware, lots of things are untested and can fail. We strongly recommend you do NOT use it in a production environments. The Beta release should only be used for testing and reporting bugs.
Neon Unstable Edition is already ready with the updates,
but other unstable repositories of other distros will soon be available too. Look out for openSUSE, Arch, Kubuntu, Fedora, and more.

Less gooo I am so hyped
What feature are you waiting for?
More panel customizations,also the change to QT6
@const_void
Probably a bit late for feature requests… but I can’t not mention a few:- Put Baloo on a leash. As soon as large files (or lots of files) are created/moved, it slows everything down and drains my laptop battery like there’s no tomorrow.
- desktop wallpapers that span multiple desktops and/or monitors, set default wallpaper for new monitors
- straightforward export/import of GUI configuration across machines. Takes me ages to set things up my way every time
@WeLoveCastingSpellz@const_void
But otherwise: Keep going!
Plasma/KDE is my favourite DE, by a long shot.Wish I had the time to get involved sometimes but there’s a way-too-long list of thing for which that goes, and I already have more hobbies than time :(
@WeLoveCastingSpellz
On the one hand, eeeeeeee it’s plasma 6, gotta get the beta.
On the other hand, I can’t brick my Linux install otherwise I’m screwed (running fedora asahi, btrfs on 16k page size causes severe limitations when it comes to getting files out of a system)
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social can’t wait until my framework laptop arrives 2024 Q1 and I can install arch with plasma 6 on it
I wonder if I can get my hands on this beta on NixOS. Anybody know of a flake or overlay?
Edit: I found a flake! Testing it now.
Where? Ya got a link?
@baduhai Sorry, failed to past the link https://community.kde.org/Plasma/Plasma_6
Thanks! I also eventually came across the link.
Can I just enable the KDE-unstable repo in arch and test?
EDIT: Yes, just follow the wiki and reboot!
HDR (for games) here we gooo
Edit 2: Ok, gotta wait a bit more for the great work of Zamundaaa to be merged. Can’t wait!
Let’s hope the HDR is better than Windows the last time I tried it.
Not just yet! For now only the desktop has HDR gamma and color settings, don’t expect more than that until more patches arrive.
And I understand that, at least in this first release, the objective is to have gaming hdr, not movies nor images…
dont seem to get the new build. did you do anything exept adding the repo in pacman.conf
Make sure you follow the wiki: you need to put the repo at the top of the list!
Long live KDE! You guys are my heros.
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social i really hope the Wideness and Bigness of thigns are customizable
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social
