Used to date an avid runner. She had a participation medallion on a ribbon for every completed marathon. I’m pretty sure everyone who completes a 26-mile run gets one.
Just did a 5k for cancer research this weekend and we got a medal for it 🤷🏼♂️ hell, my wife and dog (yes, my dog got her own medal, it was adorable) got one for one walking it 😅
Ultimately it’s just a piece of cheap metal, not like it’s impractical to give them out willy nilly
Can confirm, although at one event I just got a pin. I was in Tromso, Norway and ran 10k at the Midnight Sun Marathon (yup, the marathon itself was at midnight, with a full fucking sun in the sky), and I got a ribbon medal, a smoothie, bottled water and blueberries after passing the finish line. I’m not even fast, I completed the 10k at 58 minutes, lol

Yup, they do the same for half marathons, 10ks and 5ks
Sometimes the first 3 will get special medals, but but everyone else gets the same one
