I think it’s weird to know more than maybe some fun factoids, like that Trent Reznor’s family owns one of the biggest HVAC companies in the US and you can see heaters with “Reznor” on the side in like every Home Depot. I think know intimate details about everything they’ve done since high school is not healthy.

Wait is this the origin of the name Nine Inch Nails? He just spent a lot of time in hardware stores while his dad pointed out HVAC units and prattled on about the family legacy?

honestly the latter, pop culture has sucked ever since they stopped letting bands into the music industry and the streaming economy killed netflix. literally no reason to keep up with it any more

i think it’s weird to know anything about the personality or personal life of a complete stranger whose music you like, yeah. i think it’s weird and creepy and im not a fan of it.

i have people whose works of art i appreciate, but i dont know or want to know about their personal lives. they’re not my friends. theyre not my associates. they’re strangers who make things i enjoy. we dont have a relationship.

What if the music is about their personal life?

someone saying something in a song does not mean it’s literally a true fact about their life. the only way you learn that is if you go beyond the art

they’re strangers who make things i enjoy. we dont have a relationship.

This is the media equivalent of preferring DoorDash to eating at a restaurant. People should want to learn about an artist and the context behind the art they enjoy.

Art is labor. It inherently facilitates a relationship between the audience and the artist. We ought to be able to learn about an artist and the context behind their art without forming some sort of unhealthy parasocial attachment, and if not, it is important to understand what’s preventing us from doing so.

I mean sure, if you say so, but I’m criticizing the parasocial attachment fundamentally, everybody else here is going way off the rails
