This is really cool stuff, and I appreciate how it isn’t just “this is how it was” but how the author’s taking the time to head off a lot of contemporary perspectives’ “but why didn’t they just XYZ”.

I’m also quite reminded of how Covid’s impact on the economies caused a lot of folks like me to learn about the downsides of just in time supply chains, never mind their efficiencies.
