This might be a bit old now, as it start up a few weeks ago, but it’s an alternative to gup.pe groups, with the key difference that it allows an admin to manage to group membership. Could be worth talking to the dev for an interview

I haven’t played with it first hand myself yet, as I don’t want to end up admining a group, but I’m hoping we’ll see more groups formed on it that I can join
