my mom fucking adores harry potter still, but think god she’s not on twitter
Went to a friend’s apartment to play DnD. Saw huffle puff flags on the walls and a big painting of the hogwarts castle. Why people are obsessed with children’s books is beyond me. I feel that much about them before you get into the fact that they are books written by a terf who leverages them to bully trans people.
It was the last time they read a book probably
to expand on this: last time they read a book because they enjoyed it before the amerikkkan school system turned reading into a chore that everyone hates
On behalf of the rare individual who wants the author separated from the work, genuinely sorry. We know most public HP support comes from people who are ambivalent or actively anti-trans so don’t get your wires crossed, I’m not saying you should ask each Gryffindor scarf if “they have legitimate concerns about the erasure of womanhood” if they’re even hiding behind that obvious bullshit anymore. It’s pretty much a given now. It just sucks that Death of the Author is a failure in this case.
first, minor point but that’s not what death of the author refers to. it was a proposal for interpreting texts independently of any “intention.” barthes had nothing to say about the ethics of media consumption.
second, the issue is not so much with the messages of the book/movie/video game franchise itself, but with the fact that it puts money directly in the pocket of a trans exterminationist. to make a comparison that, no, i don’t think is overwrought, buying one of hitler’s paintings after he became fuhrer wasn’t bad because the content of the painting is offensive.
I know only 1 queer person IRL (well, i know a few, but most of them are people from high school I don’t talk to and/or distant relatives), who is also a millitant feminist and a staunch supporter of all things LGBTQ. She also used to be a huge Harry Potter fan, and even got a couple of Potter-related tattoos. I desperately want to ask her if she knows any of the J K Rowling stuff, because the woman genuinely doesn’t seem to use any social media.
