    arguably our childhood experiences may shape the archetypes and symbols through which we subconsciously understand the world.

    But like, if that’s the case, that’s true for everyone to some degree, not just people whose specific tastes can be easily (and reductively) correlated with a single relationship.

    “Issues” has a negative connotation to it and I’m always critical of the idea that some innocuous thing necessarily symbolizes something worse (thus suggesting the innocuous thing itself is a problem). Unless you’re experiencing problems in your life or interpersonal relationships, or causing undue harm to people around you, it doesn’t really matter whether your tastes come from unconscious symbolism, evolutionary drive, or whatever mechanism. Although it can be interesting to think about.
