I feel a bit conflicted emphasizing pretrial detention. There’s so much systemically wrong with who gets convicted. There’s so much systemically wrong with the conditions of incarceration. It seems like focusing on pretrial detention might be read as an implicit sanction; “it’s fine if they’re actually guilty.”
And yet from a tactical perspective, it seems like if there are small government people out there acting in good faith, focusing on the conditions of pretrial detention ought a good way to nudge them over to realizing how horrific American incarceration is in general. “What the government can do to you without even convicting you of anything.”
Do those good faith actors exist?
