It would be funny if China psyoped the US into going to the moon, and China successfully makes it to Mars a week later
And just to salt the wound, the Chinese ship makes a stop at the US lunar base to top off the Helium-3 tank, throw a party and invite the US base workers, and give them a care package of wine and sweets because they had extra and figured the US could use a win.
More like a space chase, since the US has only ever chased after AES states once they start making serious progress.
China also has far larger ambitions for space than just landing on a rock. They want to utilize asteroids and, perhaps also the moon, for mining and possibly more, since that type of activity wouldn’t harm our ecosystems back home.
