    Crazy how even the most basic innocuous messaging apps become a threat in the eyes of the IR. I’m not even particularly anti-IR, but this shit is the worst. When they do this, it paints them in a really bad light.

      Like to preserve their established order, they feel they have to prevent people from connecting. That’s infuriating. But that’s the whole world these days, isn’t it.

        Telegram was an easy way for us to keep in touch with my grandparents back home before the IR banned it. Now signal is banned? Whose grandparents are going to be able to use a VPN? Infuriating.

      It’s just a reaction, and probably not a very well thought out one. Appearances matter a lot, otherwise there’s already a bunch of Internet based software that anyone in Iran can use to communicate privately and securely. After Telegram was blocked in Iran, WhatsApp became a major social institution, and that’s encrypted as well.
