I love and miss the St. John’s bridge. Only the Fremont bridge in Seattle has a fraction of its character, and none of its gravitas. I remember once being so upset that my mind went blank and I walked from the University of Portland campus through pouring rain to the bridge and across to Forest Park… In the middle of the bridge’s span, the wind seems otherworldly.
