Desperately waiting for Miyo to develop some sense of self worth and stop taking shit from people.
So the cousin’s plan was to make a deal with the emperor to get Miyo back and then what? Keep her locked in the house forever, marry her against her wishes and have children? How is he any different than her previous family?
This is a recurring thing in this show that’s starting to really irk me, characters do reprehensible things to Miyo and then the show just shrugs it off like it’s no biggie, the shithead cousin is already getting a redemption arc without the show even acknowledging how fucked up what he did is, grandfather isn’t much better but with the way they are portraying him I’m supposed to have a favorable opinion of him and I really don’t.
Agreed. Miyo just traded the Saimori family for the Usuba. The only difference between the two really is that she isn’t treated like a servant with the Usubas despite remaining a prisoner.
I think the first half of this show was really strong, but I feel a bit disappointed by the latter half. I think there is a version of the story in which Miyo’s dreams could help her piece together her mother’s backstory while simultaneously strengthening the bond with Kudo as they work together to overcome the burden these undeveloped powers place on her body.
Dreams can be an incredible narrative tool, but as far as we know, the dreams that she was experiencing didn’t really have any narrative importance other than that they were supernatural and very disruptive. It just feels like a squandered opportunity if you want to make a character whose superpower is related to dreams and then the dreams aren’t really used to further the story.
This is where I am. The first few episodes were so strong, and I was genuinely excited to see where it went. Then it went to filler episodes where you would think with all the care and affection she was being shown, and the things she was learning, she’d become stronger and more her own person.
I really feel like if the Usubas start pressuring her to use her power for evil, as it stands now she’d do it and hope that someone would come save her. That’s pretty disappointing to be honest.
I’ll finish the show, but with the lack of development, it makes me wonder if the source material is the same and Miyo will just be a low self esteem damsel in distress waiting for Kudo to come make her happy. Not sure I’m interested in continuing if that’s the case.
I was really really hoping it would go something like this, it was such a good opportunity to help Miyo explore herself and her relationship with Kudo instead they went this weird route with her family.
Agree so much. I’m really not jiving with the way this show is going, I hate this perfect victim, goody two shoes, always ready to blame herself version of Miyo, I was hoping she’d learn to be more than that but it doesn’t seem the show is too keen on giving her that kinda character development.
What I’m wondering is how closely the anime is following the light novels, which I’ve never read. Maybe it was the original author who wasn’t giving her proper character development (or was saving it for later volumes).
I’m unfamiliar with the light novels so no idea if that is the case, regardless this doesn’t seem like the kinda show that’ll have multiple seasons. Maybe it’ll get more seasons and Miyo will receive all the character development that I’m hoping for but currently I’m not enjoying the show too much.
