The problem is that the cost of living is going up for the general public right now. What vast majority of people care about is being able to pay their bills and not to have their standard of living decrease further.
Fossil fuels are the easy and quick solution that allows people to continue externalizing the problems into the future. While there’s a small percentage of people who can look at a big picture and realize that systemic change is needed, most people make a calculus on a personal level.
The kind of change that’s needed requires a stable government that’s able to make large scale plans and commit to implementing them. The only major country that’s currently able to do that is China.
I’m all for trying to educate people and promote sustainable solutions, but realistically I just don’t see anything changing until there is a massive climate catastrophe that starts affecting people in the west personally that they can no longer ignore.
