Jakarta is an awful awful city. I grew up there and hated it then, in the 1980s, and it’s only gotten worse.

Extraordinarily overcrowded, extremely polluted, it’s sinking into the sea, very loud calls to prayer 5 times a day, always very hot and muggy. I can’t wait until they move the capital to kalimantan as that will be a vast improvement and hopefully Jakarta can be disbanded over time.

But the fact is, it’s still much better than other cities with its choice of public transportation, infrastructure, public service, places to hang out and eat, etc. Because for decades the development was very Jakarta centric, it’s just starting to get spread out after Jokowi elected.
I feel like I’m visiting another country after leaving Jakarta. No wonder many people have moved there, not to mention the better job opportunities with higher salaries.

Apart from its pollution and overpopulation, the quality of life is still better than in other cities in Indonesia. If you fall ill due to pollution, at least you have access to the best doctors and hospitals.
