On an iphone the map renders instantly when you zoom out but on android you have to wait for 3 seconds. Why is that?

Well, that probably depends greatly on the device you are using. There’s dozens of Android smartphones out there.

With this said, OsmAnd updated their rendering engine last year to use OpenGL, so the way each phone and OS handles OpenGL will have a great impact too. Of course considering that you have your Android OsmAnd configured to use the Version 2 rendering engine (which uses OpenGL), and not Version 1.

Pixel 7 Pro, using OpenGL, offline maps. All of my custom profiles are not smooth. It takes up to 2-3 seconds to render everything.

It’s still good. Considering how much useful information could be rendered in OSMAnd at once, I’m happy with what I have and hope for future improvements :)

A few years ago OSMAnd for iOS was much more limited than Android version. Not sure how it is today though. If that’s still the case, could be just features are limited and app does less work.

Or it could be fast Apple processors, better rendering API or anything else.

Screenshot from OSMAnd on Pixel 7P for illustration

On the screenshot you see: vector offline map, 3d hill shadows, height countour lines, 3d view, many route layers, navigation and POIs rendered.
