According to WHO statistics for 2019, 70% of suicides globally are committed by men.
In the US, this number goes as high as 80%, according to CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/suicide/facts/data.html
As I understand it, women attempt suicide at higher rates than men, but men select methods with higher rates of death.
That’s an interesting observation. I didn’t find such info in the source I posted, could you provide some if you have it on hand?
If not, it’s alright :)
Detail and sources can be found here
Thanks!
Man, that was some dark statistics to read through.
The topic of suicide is always very grim. Even scarier is how many people get on the verge of it, driven by hopelessness and despair.
Yeah agreed. If everyone considering suicide would actually follow through, it would be devastating.
People don’t really care about men unless they’re beyond the median bell curve threshold (rich/white/etc). As if that’s what defines a human experience.
In truth, I hardly find these statistics surprising.
People don’t care about white men generally (hence terms like “white trash”). Rich, famous, highly skilled athletes/musicians/scientists/actors/politicians/etc are what people care about. Ultimately it comes down to “what have you done for me lately?”
In other words, people care about themselves as a rule, and the extent to which they care about others is related to what utility others can provide to the “carer.”
Culturally, men are often seen as more dispensable, as they are not the ones giving birth. They are also taught to be more “tough”, which leads to less visits to mental health professionals, and, subsequently, deterioration of mental health issues.
according to my biology teacher, this is not cultural but rather a biological fact prevalent in (most? all?) animals - not that this would help in any debate
What exactly? Dispensability of males? It is indeed common in the animal world, though not universal; besides, we don’t struggle to survive as a species, and culturally evolved to be humane.
imho the “humane” part is mostly propaganda to hide the insane atrocities of our time. there is way more (hu)man-made misery than in earlier times
Earlier times featured slavery, neverending wars everywhere, and a lot of other sources of completely man-made misery.
Now we got to understand all lives matter, sudden deaths of people are perceived as a big tragedy, yet men are still less grieved upon.
