For the record, it’s very rare for private servers to pull these kinds of numbers. I suspect there’s a huge boost due to a few factors:
- 2004scape is open source (https://github.com/2004Scape/)
- The lead developer Pazaz previously helped a lot of other remakes, so is well known
- Jagex closed Scape05 just last month, so the players need somewhere to go
