Prime Minister François Bayrou sparked outrage from the opposition, and indignation from his allies, when he referred to a feeling taking root in France of being “flooded” by immigration. The prime minister was accused of citing the “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory that has fuelled the far right for decades.

Nothing new in France, Macron has been doing it since 2017. As someone smarter than me once wrote:
the trouble with centrists is that they’re neither left-wing nor left-wing
I would argue that the entirety of post-90s french politics is an accelerating drift towards fascistic centrism

He struggles to sell a coherent economic program so the easy way to stop asking questions about the economy is to deflect using outrageous cultural wars debates
