best decision of 2025 so far, I’m already hearing way more interesting and experimental music from lesser-known/independent artists

haven’t paid for a Spotify subscription for about two years, but I still used the free version (with an app that mutes the ads) but it’s so fucking awful - every time I open that garbage app it tries to queue up some mainstream track they’re promoting and I can’t even access my play queue with the free version - nor can I listen to albums or playlists in order, making it mostly useless

I started building up my local .flac library (thanks to soulseek and bandcamp fridays) but that’s just on my PC and I still missed being able to easily stream full albums on my phone. then I remembered Soundcloud has a Spotify-like subscription, which everyone scoffed at when it was first announced but I’m using the free trial and it’s not too bad, not any worse than Spotify anyway. plus I get exposed to relatively unknown artists who can’t necessarily afford to get their music distributed on other platforms

sorry if this sounds like an ad - I’m sure SC is run by ghouls and I doubt they pay artists any better than Spotify or Apple does but it’s nice having an alternative that isn’t giving money to fucking Joe Rogan. I’m just glad to get that stupid green app off my phone

Spotube is a good alternative to Spotify if you still want to stream music from there. It’s free and open source. The only issue is that sometimes it plays the wrong source for a song, but you can easily change it with the press of a button.

I’m the owner of a family plan with 5 friends on it I suppose i could just tell one of them it’s their problem now. I haven’t downloaded music to a device in so long but it really is high time to do the annoying work i guess

you can use navidrome over same local library and one of airsonic-compatible apps on the phone that will allow you to download cache them on the phone, so if you have big boy storage phone - it’s a solution for sync issues of your own files

if you don’t need dlna or logitech media server it’s perfectly fine and simple, it uses airsonic/subsonic standard and there are lots of apps for them meow-fiesta (but not so great on something like smart audio, i think, where you don’t have apps, and where dlna/lms might matter)

I won’t lie, I broke down and re-installed (free) Spotify. I was stubbornly sticking to Bandcamp and my cd’s for the past year, but eventually wanted to broadly listen to stuff I didn’t own.

I deleted Spotify December 2022 when it informed me I was the number 2 listener on Spotify for Sturgill Simpson for the year of our lord 2022.

I mean, I’m the one who listened that much but for some reason having it quantified made me want to boot the app.

I just use Youtube. Not Youtube Music or Premium or whatever but I just have a browser on my phone that lets you keep Youtube videos running while the screen is off so I just use that. Get fucking scammed Google

yeah the free version just kept getting worse. I knew it was over when the app tried to force me to listen to Jack Harlow, instead of just letting me continue the last playlist I was listening to

besides Spotify still makes money from the ads even if I’m muting them, and I don’t want to contribute another penny to that corporation

i ditched spotify when it became clear that rogan was a gateway drug to fascism and i wish that i had done it sooner.

it’s non-english, non-pop music is lacking; but it works for me since the library that they do have for those 2 filters is as old as i am. lol

Lately, because Newpipe has been fucked, I’ve been listening to shit I pirated twenty years ago through a piece of Free Software called Phonograph Plus
