    Unrelated, but: I know German decently well, and my husband is learning. When he first started, he would constantly ask “what’s that in English” when he saw a name. I was constantly reminding him that we don’t translate names!

    Anyway, this post gave me an extra chuckle for that reason.

      There are 0.5 to 1.5 billion people who know English, while there are at most 0.2 billion people who know some German worldwide, I thought the lemmywide proportion would be a bit similar.

        But if you translate the name and someone tries to look up the person, they won’t be able to find them. Names are usually not translated no matter if they are coincidentally combined of two translatable words.

          Given that this is an English-language community for amusingly coincidental names I don’t think we’d have been able to appreciate the joke without the translation!
