This person is clearly the main character of lemmy, I have never seen a banner that will live up to this.

instant tagline material. also yeah the banner brings a tear to my eye, someone hand making a banner including a quote that says they are “a real person with significant mental issues” is one of the funniest things ive ever seen

Putting funny shit people say about you in a banner isn’t very different to putting it in a site tagline so it’ll appeal to everyone that likes that here tbh

While this is fine and interesting, it reminds me of the “lolcows” that would eventually lean into it due to their own issues (ex: craves attention, even negative) and makes me feel icky

This person is either doing an avant-garde troll operation or they just kinda stink, they post Brietbart and stuff from all the really transphobic obscure Trotskyist parties and have like 20 alt accounts all named the same thing. I’m more inclined to think they are farming hate/interactions.

i see your concern, but my impression is that they (the lolcows) werent ever really ideologically motivated like this? i never really spent time on that side of the internet so Im not sure if my impression is accurate or not

It depends. Some were just doing/saying whatever got the most attention (like Chris Chan, which is what makes that whole thing tragic). Some had a vested interest in whatever was being farmed. Zach S and his RPGs on Kickstarter come to mind. People complaining about the projects missing deadlines, then Zach would write 5 paragraph essays (not an exaggeration) under each comment ending with threats he’d subpoena them for slander.

Then of course you have your rightwing terminally online chuds who are easily riled up by anything “SJW” easily farmed for laughs.
