The Vilnius summit could have achieved much more, if only the political willpower had allowed it
Expectations were high,
Well maybe they shouldn’t have listened to those spreading baseless, incredibly overblown claims.
not least because it was taking place in Lithuania, a country that’s been a great friend to Ukraine long before this war.
And that means…what, exactly? That all other members of NATO lose their voice and opinion because a meeting is held in the Baltics?
Volodymyr Zelenskiy has emphasised numerous times that no one in Ukraine is expecting Nato to accept us during the war.
Good, because that’s not happening
What he was asking for was a statement that we will be invited as soon as the victory (or peace deal) is achieved.
He got it officially from german minister of defense Pistorius:
“Everyone says Ukraine’s future is in NATO once the war is over”
Nato could have promised to start negotiations as soon as the war is over,
It did.
What this article does not mention, or quote, is Selensky himself demanding more than just an invitation after the war is over, namely a clear "time frame […] for the invitation. Well a clear time frame is only possible to provide if Ukraine can provide a clear time frame to victory. Which it can’t.
Also, even when Ukraine gets an clear timeframe (x months after war ends), Putain will never sign a peace treathy. At least now the talk have started. To be honest, I doubt they can join while Putin lives.
