I know that, for CarPlay, the approval process is more ridged than with a mobile or desktop app. My guess is that Google and Apple don’t want to be found liable for dangerous / distracting technology.

My guess is that Google, like Apple, it’s pretty nervous about letting developers go crazy with UIs that are used while driving.
