What is the purpose of not releasing the names? I have a feeling that the excuse is that they don’t want to give Russia ammunition for “propaganda” but I think keeping the names secret actually makes that worse, it just shows that Canada is more than willing to protect Nazis rather than show that it is committed to combating them.
If they are embarrassed for bringing Nazis into the country in the first place, then they can make up for it by releasing the names. This whole situation is stupid, there is no reason for keeping this confidential. I have a feeling that Someone’s family members are on that list.
I mean, if Putin actually ended up being exactly as evil as he is now, but with more following what North America and Europe say (as was originally expected when backing his power-grabs) I’m pretty sure Canada would still have done this. Post-Cold War, there was a long while there where they were all happy to help the anti-communist Yeltsin protege take over and consolidate power, there would have been no reason to hide from a Russian foreign policy perspective. I’d guess it probably has more to do with connections across defense and industry developed by the Nazis taken in, like how it was with the US, plus Canada’s special relationship with Ukrainian cultural groups in the country.

Given who the current Deputy Prime Minister is, I suspect the reason is that multiple (current and former) MP’s have parents or grandparents on that list. Neither the Liberals or Conservatives want the public to know that their members’ personal wealth may be rooted in Nazi plunder.
I’ll bet Chrystia Freeland and other politicians have more skeletons in their closet, than we’ve thought
