Most people in my life looked at me a little crazy until the last few years, most would agree Musk probably sucked because of the apartheid SA emerald fortune (mine itself was in Zambia or something) but they still thought he was smart/genius or that his products were stand-out. I was only aware because I looked into the Hyperloop stuff in 2013, being big into trains myself. That convinced me he was some kind of idiot. Later I realized he was probably just kicking up dust around public transit to maybe distract from CA HSR and seeking more grants and subsidies.
After that I started tracking the perpetual vaporware Roadster. Since 2019 I’ve only kept tabs through the thunderfoot videos debunking Musk. That guy’s anti-creationist videos were the first things I watched on YouTube other than south park and anime, ditched him over the feminism freakout but I can throw his Musk hate vids on in mpv. No view count, no foul.
